Sarge, I’m very interested to see some of the results/conclusions of this testing. I’m a pretty recent MMO “convert”, about 2 years now. I had some minor success with an expensive oil additive, but was disappointed based on the claims.

Anyways, a fellow told me to try MMO. I was hesitant to try it, but eventually did. The fact that it contained solvents is what put me off a bit. However, after researching the product and viewing UOA’s, I gave it a whirl. The positive reviews/success stories were overwhelming(more than I’ve seen for any other product in it’s market).

The first vehicle I used it in was a 2000 Toyota Corolla. I was quite surprised at the effectiveness of MMO in removing deposits in the engine(over a few thousand miles). I also experienced a smoother running, quieter engine. Lastly, time and again the vehicles that I’ve put MMO into see gains in fuel economy. I’ve heard people say “it gives you better MPG because it thins the oil”. So I decided to do a “mini-test” of my own in our currently owned 2003 Toyota Corolla. I always use 5/10w30 oil in this car, mostly 5w30. I also keep extensive fuel records as I’m a courier and drive ~50,000 miles/year. Anyways, I did one oil change with 2.5qts of 5w30, 1qt 10w40 and 1/2qt of MMO. The 10w40 was to compensate for any possible thinning effects. The result was that the OCI with MMO achieved 35.5mpg over 3,000 miles. The next OCI with the same driving habits yielded 34.5mpg over 3,000 miles(this was synthetic 5w30 only).

I was happy with a 1mpg improvement with only 1/2qt of MMO added. Another thing I noted; both OCI’s required no top off oil. I’ve heard many say that MMO probably burns off. Some of it may, but my experiences have not been the case. Other cars I’ve used MMO in use oil at the same rate as w/out MMO. Those have included a 2000 Taurus w/ 168,000 miles, 2002 Lancer with 165,000 miles, our 2003 Corolla, and a 2005 Corolla with 117,000 miles.

I don’t know why MMO works so well, but it does for me! Again, even w/ the solvents it contains, the UOA’s are always very good. Plus, I’ve seen first hand that MMO cleans up valvetrains.

Just my experience smile

I have never been an advocate of adding “stuff” to an oil or a fuel unless there is a well defined deliverable and a clear defined return on a investment in both money and time. Todays oil(s) are far superior to what we had in the 60’s/70’s for sure. Don’t get me started on todays ethanol/gas situation.......
With that said.................
Todays oils are under a heck of a lot more stress than what our engines put on oil(s) back in the day. I would submit my 389ci GTO put less stress on my old Castrol 40 weight and leaded gas than a 4 banger Toyota does today on high end Synthetics and ethanol laced fuels of today. Fuel dilution (as mentioned in the viscosity thread) higher RPM’s/Stress/Heat etc. So we must allow a cleaner engine to maximize the lubrication and flow.....Some will debate that todays oils have all the add packs/cleaning agents that you need to keep your engine clean....then you can get into the discussion of economics of achieving this “cleanliness”.
My mindset is fairly simple (just like my mind:) )
Can I achieve a higher level of efficiency (as defined by common parameters of efficiency=longer component life/MPG/Emissions testing etc.)with an additive in a mid range priced oil? Now let me say something here.....I am talking about the average Joe out there. The average Joe is buying gallon jugs of Dino/Fram filters at the WalMart. Filling up his car/truck fuel tank at the 7-11 or some other off brand convenience store. They do not clean/change air filters....they run oil out to ridiculous OCI’s cuz they forgot.....they go to the Jiffy Lube when they have the time.....Do not even know what a PCV valve is nor do they care...I digress.......
If we could get the average Joe to use Amsoil, PP, Mobil1 or Shaffer’s, utilize reasonable OCI’s and follow manufacturer recommended parts maintenance then none of us would even be here. Those following/utilizing aforementioned guidelines and products will probably not realize much of any benefit from any additive. But will “tinker” with everything anyway cuz they are put together that way. “They” have dual oil filters on their weed eater smile I am focused on the average user following average maintenance and products.
Yes....we have seen absolute benefits from adding “stuff” to our fuel as discussed in my last “experiment” published all over the web. Using a product that has been around forever and done by many for years before I typed word one. We have seen benefits from adding various products to the oil..... Cleaning, efficiencies (as described above).....and from many different product....RX/MMO/Kano/SeaFoam blah blah blah..... they all produced some level of efficincies/benefits.........
The Average Joe Requirements........
What is the expected benefit?
Is it easy to aquire? Can I buy it locally from WalMart/AutoZone/PepBoys etc.
What is the cost?
What do I have to do? What is required of me?
How often do I do it?
Will it last the entire OCI until I get back to Jiffy Lube God knows when?

It has to be cheap...readily available....so easy to apply a South African red butt Baboon can do it....and it has to deliver results.
Just these simple requirements eliminate many products.

I would challenge anybody reading this to think through the Average Joe Requirements (or anything I have said here) and let me know what products you think meet all the listed requirements.
My list is very short.....and I want to document and share data from utilizing MMO in the Average Joe world. With a bunch of average Joe’s participating.
And thank you PantherMike for sharing your experiance.

Sarge, I’d be interested in a synopsis of your data on using TCW-3 oil in cars and trucks. I’m a big two stroke Lawnboy guy and have been playing with oils for them for a few years. Were you using it in both the fuel and crankcase? What ratios? Etc. Thanks.

No just fuel. I am on a MMO forum here and do not wish to distract. I’ll PM you.
