Sarge, I’m very interested to see some of the results/conclusions of this testing. I’m a pretty recent MMO “convert”, about 2 years now. I had some minor success with an expensive oil additive, but was disappointed based on the claims.
Anyways, a fellow told me to try MMO. I was hesitant to try it, but eventually did. The fact that it contained solvents is what put me off a bit. However, after researching the product and viewing UOA’s, I gave it a whirl. The positive reviews/success stories were overwhelming(more than I’ve seen for any other product in it’s market).
The first vehicle I used it in was a 2000 Toyota Corolla. I was quite surprised at the effectiveness of MMO in removing deposits in the engine(over a few thousand miles). I also experienced a smoother running, quieter engine. Lastly, time and again the vehicles that I’ve put MMO into see gains in fuel economy. I’ve heard people say “it gives you better MPG because it thins the oil”. So I decided to do a “mini-test” of my own in our currently owned 2003 Toyota Corolla. I always use 5/10w30 oil in this car, mostly 5w30. I also keep extensive fuel records as I’m a courier and drive ~50,000 miles/year. Anyways, I did one oil change with 2.5qts of 5w30, 1qt 10w40 and 1/2qt of MMO. The 10w40 was to compensate for any possible thinning effects. The result was that the OCI with MMO achieved 35.5mpg over 3,000 miles. The next OCI with the same driving habits yielded 34.5mpg over 3,000 miles(this was synthetic 5w30 only).
I was happy with a 1mpg improvement with only 1/2qt of MMO added. Another thing I noted; both OCI’s required no top off oil. I’ve heard many say that MMO probably burns off. Some of it may, but my experiences have not been the case. Other cars I’ve used MMO in use oil at the same rate as w/out MMO. Those have included a 2000 Taurus w/ 168,000 miles, 2002 Lancer with 165,000 miles, our 2003 Corolla, and a 2005 Corolla with 117,000 miles.
I don’t know why MMO works so well, but it does for me! Again, even w/ the solvents it contains, the UOA’s are always very good. Plus, I’ve seen first hand that MMO cleans up valvetrains.
Just my experience
