Okay, so now I look like a huge hypocrite. I have a sticking solenoid valve and I don’t want to crawl up under the car, drop the oil pan, and get to the transmission. Do you think MMO would help and also be safe to use indefinitely for a sticking solenoid valve? If so, how much should be used on the conservative side?

Thank you,
Techniker

I would try lubegard red or the black universal bottle u can get it at Napa parts, go to Lubegard.com if u want to research it,,,but it is the only product reconized by the OEM makers and transmission repair shops to stop tranny failure....I wish I had found out about it before I spent 900 bucks for the same problem u are having, its one bottle of 16 quarts, but look up the tranny fluid ur car uses or get someone at Napa to help u.  this stuff works,,,It IS NOT SNAKE OIL...........

I think it would depend on what condition your transmission is in. If it is real dirty inside adding MMO might cause more harm than good. If all that crud gets loose and starts circulating with the trans fluid it could plug up small passage ways starving areas of the transmission for oil. IMO it’s a crap shoot. It might make things better, but it could make things worse.

What do you think of Seafoam TransTune? I just bought some from Advanced Auto, but it now looks like I shall be returning it tonight.

Thanks,

You can use Marvel Mystery Oil in the transmission without any problems.  Use no more than 16 ounces.  It will dissolve any sludge or varnish and keep it in suspension until you change your transmission fluid.  It will not clog any passages.  I wouldn’t use Seafoam.  It contains alcohol, mineral spirits and a little oil.

I just wanted to give you an update. I decided to actually go with a cocktail to clean up the transmission a bit. I put about 6 oz of MMO and 4 oz of Seafoam TransTune into the ATF. 350 miles later and no sticking solenoid valves…

You might want to rethink part of your answer. Specifically the part highlighted in red. I have had expirence with both a heavily sludged engines and transmissions and yes the crud can break loose and plug oil passages. This is not a story from a friiend, this is first hand expirence. Just FYI

I stand by my response.  Marvel Mystery Oil will dissolve and KEEP IN SUSPENSION any sludge and varnish.
