New member-
Hi, This morning, pre-coffee, I uncovered my Harley and went to add the last two ounces of MMO. The cardboard seal from the cap fell right into the fuel tank on the right side. These are split Tanks. I don’t know where it is, I think it sank, can’t see it with a flash light.
So now what? The tank is over 3/4 full, will it slowly dissolve? I’m worried about it covering the hose outlet to the left tank, leaving me out of fuel. These are aftermarket tanks that are a real bear to pull. The dash and wiring is in between them and are shimmed to fit.
I think I’m gonna have to spend a beautiful afternoon wrenching. Does anyone know if the thing will dissolve or float after a while or have any idea how to get it out quickly. Maybe it’ll just sink to the rear of the tank and live there forever?
I swear this really happened and always wondered how many tin foil seals were in peoples tanks, never even remembered the cardboard seal being there. I will never forget now! Thanks!

Well, I’ll talk to myself, I said the hell with it and went riding. No problems, so I’ll have to BUY another quart to get the cardboard seal and drop it into a jar of gasoline. See if it sinks or floats and how long it lasts. Then take it from there.
Great idea! That will take the “mystery” out of the seal. I hope it just falls apart and the filters will catch it. I’ll answer myself when I find out. Thanks!

Patience there Lucky. You posted after hours for the paid guys and they will probably have to consult someone on this. Personally, I can’t see gas soaked cardboard floating up at a later date.

The gasoline/Marvel Mystery Oil soaked cardboard cap will be heavier than just gasoline so it will not float to the top.  Also, the cardboard will not dissolve in the gasoline.  What may occur over time is that the cardboard will shred and become fine fibers which should be caught by the fuel filter and then you would have to change the filter.  Best try and get the cardboard out as soon as you can.  We have tried soaking the cap from a Marvel Mystery Oil bottle in 100 % Marvel and the cardboard did not separate from the cap, so this is a very rare problem.  In fact, it is the first time we’ve have heard about it.

Hi All,
You are right, I was impatient. I apologize.
The cardboard was stuck to the end of the bottle with the cap off. I didn’t look and poured, thats when I saw it fall into the tank. My bike is slightly raked higher in the front so I believe it is in the rear of the right tank. It doesn’t seem to be hurting anything so I’ll wait till the tanks are off to fish for it.
Sorry, I was a little upset about it, I am so careful to remove all of the foil seal on a new bottle.
Thanks for your replies to my post, I will continue to be a loyal customer. But I sure will check before pouring, never again!
Thanks, Lucky.

Update- I have run 3 full tanks of gas, since the cardboard fell in. No problems at all, the only thing is, I can’t bring myself to buy it anymore. I’ve been using the Autozone fuel treatment, has a nice little tab to pull the foil off. Take a look at the sealing method they use. Much better design.
We just pulled a foil seal out of a master cylinder at work, must have come off a bottle of brake fluid. I work for Uhaul and see all kinds of problems like this. I’ve always hated those seals! -Lucky

I’ve been buying other brands of injector cleaner lately and notice that they will have a pull-tab on top of the seal.
Much more user friendly, I have had another bottle of MMO where the cardboard came out of the cap. Seems to be quite common for me.
Lucky.

I don’t think I’d switch from a product that I know works just because the little cardboard seal was kicking my a$$.

I won’t let it kick my ass anymore since I’ve become aware of it.
It is just an annoying little problem that could easily be fixed it seems.
Maybe it’s because I use an ounce or two at a time and the others I empty the bottle in one shot. Thanks for your reply. I really do like the product.

It’s funny. I buy MMO by the gallon. I carry a 16 ounce MMO bottle in my car with 4 ounces of premeasured MMO in it to add with every fill-up. The first bottle I had kept losing the cardboard seal and causing problems. I bought a new bottle about this time last year and it’s never caused any problems. Go figure.

Wow, thanks for posting that.
When Rich said they couldn’t duplicate it, I had my doubts, cause it was happening all the time.
Maybe just a bad batch or something, I would wait for it to fall out so I could catch it.
I’ll pickup a new bottle to test again. I have to say my fuel system has been trouble free for a few years now. Found a propane shop that sell non-ethonated gas for the same price of premium. It’s still rated at 87 octane though.
Lucky.

Well,
If I’m ever in Toronto with an asian escort, hopefully a female, she can help me look for these cardboard gaskets that continue to fall out of EVERY bottle of MMO i buy.
I can not believe this cannot be duplicated, it happens with nine out of ten bottles I buy.
Thats’s just to give it some kind if odds of it not happening one time.

Yes, I realize this thread is two years old.

Sorry you’re still having problems lucky. Don’t give up on MMO though. I’d find a bottle that works and just refill it from the gallon jug size. It will save you money in the long run.

Are there different distributors of MMO?  Cause I’ve never seen a “cardboard gasket” on a bottle of MMO....?  Though, at 2-3 oz. per 10 gallons - typically added every other week......I might add MMO two, maybe three times in a month, and the quart lasts me about that.....but have been using MMO for at least 2 years off and on....and I be darned, can’t recall ever seeing any cardboard.......?  Nor can I see how this cardboard is a problem?  I _HAVE_ used products that DO have the cardboard bottle cap “under” the plastic cap, and I just flick off the plastic cap the first time I open the bottle......I see no need for it, after “I” open the bottle.....perhaps it’s meant to keep a better seal?  No idea....

One idea I have, keep the bottle upright.....if your MMO comes with cardboard gaskets.....perhaps by laying the bottles down, the cardboard is being “immersed” in the MMO longer....?  Causing it to fall out/off when you screw the cap off.....?

Gotta say though....that or just ditch the cardboard “gasket”.......all my MMO bottles screw on tight, like an infact cold reliever “child proof” cap......never had a bottle leak so far.....

Now granted, I don’t deal with the bottles themselves too often, I typically keep them in my garage, and pre-fill my 4 oz. bottle of Acetone, and single-dose it into the tank at the pump every fill up smile

BTW, disregard jonusb, that is a spam bot....and has been reported to knujon.com - they fight these kind of spammers that spam forum message boards.
